Greetings from Guatemala by Kathie Nelson

Greetings from Guatemala,     Thought I would give an update.   Nora, John, Johana, and I left Huehue last Saturday.  We took ourselves along with 8 pieces of luggage on a Guatemalan bus.   It was a new challenge but it was ok.  The trip was  a bit rocky and the walk to the bano was a bit treacherous. We got to watch three Spanish westerns.  All three had the same actors! There was a trap door on the floor that kept bouncing up with the ride.   After arriving it took much explaining and two taxis to get us to the hotel.  Todd met us there.      On Sunday we took an up and down and around ride to lake Atilian, a lake formed by several volcanoes.   Guatemala is filled with active volcanoes.   The lake was beautiful and we all had a needed break.   Monday was quite eventful.  Nora, Todd and Johana left early to get her Guatemalan passport and her trip to a doctor to make sure all is ok.  All went smoothly.  She is now a legal citizen, and recognized as Nora and Todd’s child.  However the rest of the day was filled with unfortunate incidents.  We were involved in two car accidents.  We backed into a car, relative minor but stressful.  Then we hadn’t even gone two blocks when a McDonald’s delivery motorcycle ran right into us. Fortunately no one was insured but it sure put a damper on everyone’s feelings.  Please pray that the ramifications of the two incidents will be minor and not too costly.  After all of that, Todd still had to deliver us with all 8 pieces of luggage to Antigua, which is where we are now.       The place we are staying at is very charming but extremely noisy.  We are literally on the street.  We took an interesting trip to the local grocery store yesterday.  It is absolutely amazing how much stuff you can put underneath a stroller.  I am thankful for what little Spanish I know and the fact that our little Johana can now translate for us.  Ha ha the shoe is now on the other foot.     We are left to the final step.  Hopefully, the Xela (shayla) court has finally sent the documents to Nora’s lawyer.  Then he can give all of the paper work to the US embassy.  The embassy will review everything again and then set up an appointment for Nora, Todd, and Johana.  Todd will have to fly back for that.  They should issue her visa the following day.  Then we can go home!  We are thinking that this will happen next week.  Please pray that this all comes to pass.  My love to you all, Mom/Kathie/Mimi/Nora’s Mom

I’ve heard about the problems you’ve been having with the Embassy. Me and my friends are praying hard for y’all! You guys are incredible, I know that God loves you, and I’m absolutely blown away by all of this, more so your commitment and how hard y’all are fighting. I wish there was more I could do to help besides prayer, but if y’all think of anything let me know.

    I love you guys

About

In June of 2007 Nora and I went on a mission trip to Guatemala. We spent five days working at an orphanage in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. We built bunkbeds, painted, and loved on the children. One particular little girl named Johanna found her way into hour hearts. This website is dedicated to Johanna and documents the process of adopting her. You can read more about how we met Johanna by clicking on the Meeting Johanna link. Thank you for visiting!
